Anger Therapy For A Healthier, More Balanced & Empowered Life

Do you often feel angry, sometimes without knowing why? When you do get angry, does it escalate quickly and feel hard to control? Maybe you’ve had moments in which, afterward, you felt guilty or regretted how you reacted, especially if people in your life have said that they feel hurt or even afraid of your anger.

Do you ever feel like your anger is physically overwhelming? Perhaps it comes on as a rush of energy, heat or tension that you can’t contain.

Perhaps you’ve wondered if there’s something underneath the anger—maybe sadness, fear, or a sense of feeling out of control.

If you want to learn how to remain calm, enjoy healthy relationships and engage in productive and meaningful expression of anger, you may need some help. That’s where anger therapy can help.

As a seasoned therapist who has helped hundreds of clients better understand and express anger, I know that with increased self-awareness and the right tools, you can learn to work with your anger rather than being controlled by it.

Anger As A Messenger

Anger is a normal and even healthy and helpful emotion that wants and sometimes really needs to be expressed. Anger also isn’t just an emotion—it’s a signal. Although it might feel unwelcomed, it’s important to understand that anger is a message from within that something needs your attention. It often points to deeper emotions, unmet needs, or boundaries that feel violated.

Sometimes, small frustrations trigger a much bigger reaction, especially if you’ve been bottling up or trying to ignore anger or other difficult feelings, such as grief, frustration or pain. It can feel overwhelming, unpredictable, and even isolating. Maybe you find yourself snapping at loved ones, losing control over small frustrations, or pushing it down until it explodes. And, it’s not uncommon to experience guilt, shame or remorse afterward, wondering why your reactions are so intense.

Although it may feel hard to control now, anger is not an enemy to be defeated, but rather a messenger seeking to be understood. If you’re feeling lost in anger, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to stay stuck in this cycle.

Anger Therapy: Into The Roots

As a therapist who specializes in anger management and anger therapy, I see anger as an expression coming through you, telling you that something needs attention.

Although anger often gets a bad rap, it’s a very legitimate emotion that we’ll explore together in therapy sessions. Together, we’ll uncover and address any internal issues— deeper emotions, unmet needs, boundary violations and perhaps personal and family history—that may be driving the anger. Historical roots often lead to learned behavior around anger and can contribute to reactivity.

With compassion, practicality and through an anger management lens, I help you understand what’s really driving your anger. Together, we explore patterns, triggers and deeper emotions beneath the surface—whether it’s frustration, hurt, fear, or feeling unheard. I’ll give you practical tools to manage your reactions in the moment, helping you learn how to express yourself without damaging relationships or your own well-being.

Anger Therapy: Learning How To Pause & Respond, Rather Than React

It’s often the reaction, which can come through as hostile, and not the anger itself, that creates the external issues that impact relationships. The good news is that there are techniques you can learn that help to “modulate” excessive energy that presents as anger.

By encouraging neither suppression nor an uncontrolled expression of anger, you can learn to better identify, tolerate and eventually dissipate how anger is felt in the body. By staying with what is happening in the body, rather than fixating on the thought-story of the anger, the intensity often subsides on its own. Once in a more calm state, a more appropriate expression of what’s truly fueling the anger can be expressed.

In sessions, you’ll also learn effective communication skills that maximize the healthy expression of anger, as well as how to be more skillful and less defensive during conflict and other activating situations. It’s quite amazing how pausing before speaking and being mindful of the words chosen and how those words are spoken can result in a collaborative dialogue rather than arguing and power struggles.
